Scholastic Competition

Reading gives us powers: the power to open doors and become keepers of different kingdoms, the power to communicate through our writing, the power to never, ever feel bored!

St Maximilian Kolbe is the name of our school. We are in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Some of our students have written stories. We invite you to visit their kingdom of creativity with us.

Superhero for a day?

by Cecilia García Domínguez

When I was sleeping I had a very strange dream. In it, there was a flower (it talked) which asked me which super-power I would like to have for a day and how it would work. I answered that I would like to grant wishes to other people and myself.

When I got up I felt very strange and I felt the urge to do something. So, I decided to go to the ice cream shop. When I arrived there, there was a long queue. I thought “Oh, how I’d love to have an ice cream without having to wait”. And then, suddenly, I really didn’t know how, a big strawberry ice cream (my favourite) was in my hand.

I was very surprised, but I ate my ice cream. It was as delicious as the last one I had bought. Then, I decided to try my super-power on other people. So I went home and there, my mother told me she had lost her golden necklace. I felt sorry for her and wished she could find it. And again, magically, it worked: the lost necklace appeared in my mother’s hands. She was very happy.

After that, I remembered it was my best friend’s birthday. I wished to have the perfect present for her. And a beautifully packed present appeared in my hands. I wondered what it was. I went to her party and gave it to her. Surprise! It was a picture camera! My friend was delighted, it was what she wanted!

During all the day, different wishes came true by only wishing them. That night, when I went to bed, I wished to keep my super-power with me. But then, I realized it would be too much and one day of magic was enough!

My super power

by Yaco Andrade

Everyone would like to have super powers, but if I had to select just one for one day… I would select: ultra intelligence!
I would use it for… making more super powers. I would spend all day in my room with: hamsters, a small saw, a microscope, a map of a brain, DNA from a bird, some anesthesia, a powerful battery and a big jar with water. How to get the first power, part 1: I separate every part of the DNA. Part 2: I give different parts of DNA to the hamsters. Part 3: I eat the same type of part of DNA that made a hamster get wings and… Voila! Wings! Now to the next power! Part A: I open my head with the saw. Part B: I grab the part of the brain that we don’t use and put it in the jar. Part C: I put it in contact with electricity. Part D: I put it back in my head. Presto! I can make things levitate! Into the last super power!

Part alpha: I do part A, B, C and D but with the imaginative part of the brain. Happiness to the world! Everything I imagine can go out through my right ear! (The right ear, not the left ear)
When the day is over, I will probably have a headache, but… I would be the Ultra Imaginative Boy!!!!! I would be able to fly, get things out of my ear and defeat the laws of physics!! I would save the world!!!!!!!!!!!!

A gift from heaven

by Paulina Frigo

It happened last week.

When I first saw Michael Jackson dance. I was dazzled. Michael Jackson has been known worldwide as the “king of pop”.

I discovered Michael Jackson three years ago.  I was fascinated by his singing and dancing.

Mainly his dancing.

I saw all the shows which showed him: his dances, his songs, his interviews after he died. All of them!

His famous moonwalk caught me.

One morning, last Friday, I woke up to go to school. I got out of bed and surprisingly I started to dance the” moon walk”.

I couldn´t stop dancing. People were surprised to see me dance in the street while going to school. Teachers, classmates, the headmistress asked me to stop dancing. I couldn´t.

I couldn´t walk, I could just dance the famous “moonwalk”. Instead of walking, I danced all the time.

“It is a gift”, I thought. “My admiration for Michael Jackson did this miracle to me”!

I liked the admiration I received.  “Look at that little girl, look at her dance”, said people in the street, in the market, in all the places I visited that day, that  wonderful day.

In the afternoon, my mother said: “Paulina, use this gift and sign up in the neighbourhood theatre. They are preparing a musical about Michael Jackson´s life and they are looking for children to dance like him. Tomorrow is the casting”.

That night I couldn´t sleep. I daydreamed imagining my future life. Everyone would be surprised by my dance. I just listened to clapping, and the “bravo”.

"Tomorrow the wishes will come true”, I thought while I fell asleep.

I woke up the Saturday morning feeling so happy. The day had come: I could show my gift in the play.

I got out of bed and half asleep I walked to the bathroom. WALKED???  And I walked and walked and walked: to the kitchen, to my parents’ bedroom…

Yesterday I could only dance and now I only walk? I couldn´t do the moonwalk.

Where was my gift? My gift was gone. I felt disappointed.

I cried. My gift had lasted only one day.

Suddenly I started thinking: Many things can happen in one day... with so many emotions.

I realized that my gift had at least lasted for one day.

Only one day, a wonderful day: the day I had a gift from heaven.

And I was happy about it.

Film review: Fast and Furious

by Alessandro Pappalardo

Last month I went to see “Fast and Furious 1”. This film is about a man, Brian O’Conner, who likes cars and goes to run the car in an illegal place. He meets three boys that want to race, too. The three boys bet U$S 2,000 but Brian does not have money so he bets his car. They run the race but he loses. The police go to the place where the race is taking place, and all the boys have to escape.

The film is set in a city and in a desert. The director is Justin Lin and the main actors and actresses are: Vin Deasel, Paul Waker, Jordana Brewster and Michelle Rodriguez.
I think “Fast and Furious 1” is excellent; the soundtrack and special effects are superb. I recommend it to people that like cars and action.
